When I was a kid, I always thought Bananas Foster was a “fancy” dessert. I’d see it being made table side and wonder when I’d get to try it for the first time. I was a young adult when I finally got my first taste and I loved it.
As an adult I still enjoy the occasional “fancy” dessert, but lacking the table side sternos, I’ve taken to a much easier way to make them. Even better, they lack the traditional rum that they are usually made with making this a dessert perfect for the whole family.
1/2 c packed light brown sugar
1/2 c apple juice (or go ahead and booze it up if you like, just like the traditional way!)
8 Tbsp unsalted butter
4 ripe bananas cut into pieces
Vanilla ice cream
Preheat grill to medium heat. On a piece of aluminum foil, place 2 Tbsp brown sugar, 2 Tbsp apple juice, 2 Tbsp butter and 1 banana, cut up. Sprinkle with cinnamon to taste.
Fold foil together to form a packet. Place on grill. Grill until bubbling, approximately 5 minutes.
Carefully remove from grill with tongs and/or oven mitt. Open packet and pour contents over bowl of vanilla ice cream. Serve immediately.
There you have it! An easy and delicious version of bananas foster. Yumm!
