The other day I shared some pictures from a distance of our venture over the bridge to the barrier islands. Today I'd like to share a few more from our drive around.
Many roads are still closed. Some towns are still closed to anyone but residents. These blockades were just one of many we encountered.
What are we standing on? The only piece of road that is left.
This is what is left of the boardwalk where my husband and I took a walk on our first date.
This doesn't even put a dent in the amount of debris sitting by the roadside waiting to be picked up. It is the contents of homes and businesses reduced to a pile of garbage.
I didn't have the heart to take pictures of the collapsed, cracked, or missing foundations of peoples homes. Nor could I capture the home where the side of the house was gone and I was looking in on the living room where nothing but a couch remained. This picture doesn't even touch any of that.
Our journey left us with heavy hearts once again. It also strengthened our resolve to do our part to help our area rebuild and once again become a strong, vibrant, community.

It is crazy how long recovery takes... we have yet to see our place in LBI but have seen video of it... well, of the demo-ed version of it, anyway. It's also amazing how much something like this can bring a community together again and rebuild!
ReplyDeleteIknow. Washed away in a day and this is what still is 3 months later.
Deleteit's such a horrible site to see, my hearts go out to all of those communities
ReplyDeleteThey are Jersey Strong, they will rebuild! Each day a tiny bit more progress is made.
DeleteWhen I visited Tuckerton and the surrounding areas back in November, it really made it all "real." It was then I realized just how long the recovery and rebuilding was going to be.
ReplyDeleteSeeing it person certainly makes more of impact than just seeing the photos or the news coverage, that is for sure.
DeleteWow, I guess for those of us who have not been at a shore point since the devastation, you kind of just forget about it a bit until you hear someone talk about it or read an update. Thanks for the reminder.
ReplyDeleteWow. These pics really tug at my heart. Will do all I can to promote the area after our visit next weekend.
ReplyDeleteRebuilding is happening every day, the Jersey Shore will be back!
