I'd like to start my post by thanking all of the men and women who have bravely served our country and made this the land of the FREE. You have given me the freedom to choose where I live, choose what I'd like to do for a living and say what I'd like to say. Because of you I get to be me! THANK YOU!
For Veteran's Day our school asks our kids to wear red, white and blue to school to be patriotic. I don't mind this because it teaches the kids awareness of the day. However, when my kids return from school and I ask them what they have learned I can almost guarantee you that Veteran's Day will not have been discussed. They will not learn about who veterans are or why we set aside the day to honor them. They will only have known they were supposed to wear red, white and blue today.
It bothers me that my children had off from school for an ENTIRE week last week but yet are in school today NOT learning about Veteran's Day. They always get 2 days off for the teachers convention which for the life of me I can't understand why it isn't held in the summer. Or if it is to be held during the school year why it isn't MANDATORY for the teachers to go. Know where my kids teachers were? Mexico and Disney...not the convention. This year they decided to close for election day as well...which I haven't seen since I started sending my kids to school. Which also bothers me because such a low percentage of peopl actually turned out to vote! Why? Probably because they were all in Disney with the above mentioned teacher! (don't get me wrong...I actually LOVE my kids teachers this year...its just the point of it all!). So instead of having the kids only go to school on Monday or Wednesday or having low attendance because of the parents who pulled their kids out for those 2 days to go away for the week....they closed school for the entire week. But today they are in school... not writing letters to veterans, not being spoken to by a veteran, not attending a ceremony, not honoring our veteran's. To me this just seems a little crazy after justifying the week off last week.
Sorry, I guess I should have labeled this post Whiny Wedneday!

I came to your blog for Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop, and ended up reading this blog as well. I completely understand your frustration.
I am a Marine Wife, and my husband just ended up on recruiting duty. So this is the first year my children have attended school at a "civilian" school, before they attended school on base.
Veteran's day is all to often looked at as a day off, instead of what it really is.
If you want them to have a lesson in how their freedom was earned for them...you can read my blog. It is the reality my children lived with everyday while living on base, whether it was one of their friends father's, or just the signs posted across the base.
I am really glad to hear that you want your children to learn the true meaning. God Bless you!!
I don't think it is whiney at all. I think it is sadly too too true. Sometimes it seems schools are unconcerned with teaching respect, awareness, and courtesy, but then they can't figure out why they aren't respected like teachers used to be.
